Primary care is an ideal and crucial setting for obesity care, with numerous opportunities for interventions and continuous patient relationships that support long-term weight management. During this webinar we will be discussing the management and challenges faced within Primary Care.

We will focus on the changes in the obesity pathway, specifically in the areas of treatment, including the use of anti-obesity medications (AOM) and surgical interventions. We will also discuss the roles of GPs and specialist treatments in managing obesity.

Associate Professor of diabetes, Somerset foundation Trust/ University of Exeter

Rob is an associate Professor at the University of Exeter, an Honorary Consultant Physician at Musgrove Park Hospital Taunton.

At the University he leads a group that researches the role that exercise, and diet can play in the prevention and management of diabetes and Obesity. Ongoing studies include testing whether remote support can maintain activity in people with type 2 diabetes (MOTIVATE T2D) and people with morbid obesity; how apps can support weight loss in tier 3 clinics and which bariatric operation is best (ByBandSleeve). He is also leading on development of a Tier 3 Obesity database and a patient app for the Society of Endocrinology.

In Taunton, Rob leads the Diabetes and Obesity Research team. Until last year he was the medical lead for a large multidisciplinary weight management service. This is a holistic service offering specialised dietary and exercise programs, drug therapy and bariatric surgery as well as running clinics for people with eating disorders and complications post surgery. In recognition of this service, Taunton is designated an International Centre of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery.

Dr Fallows is an experienced GP, Obesity and Lifestyle Medicine expert with qualifications in weight management, nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine. She works in NHS primary care where she has used group clinics to support people with long-term conditions and with the NHS Type-2 Diabetes "Paths to Remission Programme." She is Vice-President of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine and set up their Learning Academy, writing the first foundation course. Ellen teaches Lifestyle Medicine and behavioural science at Oxford University clinical school and lectures at other medical schools as well as at post-graduate training events. She is an experienced public speaker on the subject of Lifestyle Medicine, behavioural science and metabolic health. She is a Royal College of General Practitioners clinical advisor and representative.

Consultant Endocrinologist at University Hospitals Birmingham and Clinical Lead for Weight Management, Heartlands, Birmingham

Dr Jonathan Hazlehurst runs the large specialist weight management service at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. He is also a clinical academic at the University of Birmingham. He studied medicine and a DPhil at the University of Oxford. academic interests include clinical trials as well as mapping work to improve access to obesity services and a wide range of academic and commercial studies. He speaks and publishes widely in these areas. More recently he is part of several NIHR funded studies looking at long term outcomes of thyrotoxicosis treatment, prediction models for type 2 diabetes remission following bariatric surgery and an OLS i4i grant looking at digital provision of weight management services. He works closely with his ICB to try to turn NICE guidance and technology appraisals into clinical reality for patients and understands the full challenge in this area as well as the potential opportunities and pitfalls associated with digital services. He is a passionate advocate for patient first language and is proud to provide ongoing support for patient advocates as part of ECPO as well as training and support colleagues in obesity.

Sarah Le Brocq has a unique skillset of living with obesity, a background in science, 16 years’ experience of working in the pharmaceutical industry, alongside the NHS and 6 years’ experience of being a trustee/Director of an obesity charity.

Sarah has recently founded a new obesity organisation called All About Obesity, which is aiming to be the equivalent of Diabetes UK in the obesity space.
‘All About Obesity aims to be the leading obesity organisation for advancing obesity research, supporting and driving public education, a trusted resource for people living with obesity, healthcare professionals and policymakers and a support platform for people living with obesity.’

Sarah is known as a Thought Leader in the Obesity space, has a wide network of relationships with key obesity stakeholders. She is also well known in the media and is regularly called upon to give her thoughts and expertise around current Obesity affairs.
She sits on the strategic council for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Obesity, a stakeholder in NHSE’s National Obesity Audit, a lay member on the NICE Weight Management Committee, the Digital weight management technologies for specialist weight management services and a representative on the OHA Healthy Weight Strategy, lived experience group.
She has also co-authored a number of published academic papers in scientific journals.

Ann Vincent’s journey with obesity began at the age of 5, blending lived experience with academic expertise in her work on obesity research. After earning a BSc in Psychology in 2018, Ann focused her dissertation on self-worth and self-compassion among women with a BMI < 30. This research led to a connection with Dr. Simon Williams, then Chair of the Association for the Study of Obesity, paving the way for further opportunities in the field.

In addition to her research work, Ann is currently working with university students dealing with mental health concerns and neurodiversity, and she is completing a postgraduate degree in clinical psychiatry. As a trustee for both the Obesity Empowerment Network and the Association for the Study of Obesity, and a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society, she leverages her personal experiences and professional knowledge to advance research and advocacy in all aspects of obesity and its comorbidities. Ann’s dedication is driven by a passion for improving the lives of those affected by obesity..
